Overview

A chemical production site required four flow measurement points for offloading and transferring 2-EH and DINP from new bulk storage tanks.

The challenge

Each duty had different accuracy, control and media requirements, so one measurement technology was not automatically suitable for every line.

  • Provide two offloading and two transfer measurements.
  • Integrate all measurement points with the PLC.
  • Control 2-EH feed rate to manage exothermic reaction risk.
  • Measure non-conductive DINP without using a magnetic flowmeter.

Our solution

Quality Lab Solutions compared turbine and Coriolis technologies against the process, control and commercial requirements of each line.

  • Considered turbine measurement for less critical offloading duties.
  • Recommended Coriolis measurement for controlled 2-EH transfer.
  • Included downstream flow-control valve integration.
  • Rejected magnetic flow measurement for non-conductive DINP.

Results

The proposed architecture covered four measurement points and allowed operators to set controlled transfer rates, including a 20 l/min operating example for the 2-EH feed line.

Customer benefits

The customer received a duty-by-duty solution instead of an unnecessarily uniform specification.

  • Improved control of chemical feed rate.
  • Reduced risk of temperature rise during vessel charging.
  • Appropriate technology for non-conductive media.
  • PLC-ready measurement and control signals.
