Coriolis vs electromagnetic flow meters

The two dominant industrial flow technologies measure different things. Choosing correctly comes down to the media, the duty and what the measurement is for.

What is a Coriolis mass flow meter?

A Coriolis meter measures mass flow directly by sensing the twist a moving fluid induces in vibrating tubes. Because it reads mass rather than volume it is largely unaffected by changes in density, temperature or pressure, and it typically measures density and temperature at the same time.

What is an electromagnetic flow meter?

An electromagnetic flow meter measures conductive liquids using Faraday's law: liquid moving through a magnetic field generates a voltage proportional to its velocity. With no moving parts and an unobstructed bore, it suits water, slurries and corrosive liquids.

Which should you choose?

Coriolis meters measure mass flow of almost any fluid and also read density and temperature; electromagnetic meters measure volumetric flow of conductive liquids economically at larger line sizes. Send the media and duty and we will recommend.

Sizing a Coriolis meter

Size a Coriolis meter to your flow rate rather than your pipe diameter. Each nominal size covers a working band — DN6 to around 1,200 kg/h, DN25 to 12,000 kg/h, DN80 to 180,000 kg/h — and accuracy is best with normal flow in the upper part of the band. Check the pressure drop at maximum flow, and send us your media, flow range and line details for a sizing recommendation.
